Michelle Carter was charged with manslaughter for her role in her lover Conrad Roy’s suicide, which shocked a mourning family and captivated the nation. Following the launch of Hulu’s limited series “The Girl from Plainville,” the inquiry and Carter’s role are once again in the spotlight. On July 12, 2014, Roy, 18, died of carbon monoxide poisoning while parked outside of a Kmart in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Roy apologised and encouraged his family to “enjoy life to the fullest” in a note he left behind.

The Girl from Plainville‘ goes into the “texting-suicide” case involving 18-year-old Conrad Roy III’s tragic demise. The Hulu drama follows Conrad’s romance with Michelle Carter and the latter’s court trial after the former’s death through simultaneous narratives. The two youths find refuge in one other, declare their love, and even plan ways for Conrad to commit suicide throughout their time together and over thousands of text conversations.

In Episode 6, Conrad texts Michelle and says, “I can’t do this,” implying that they are no longer together. When she attempts to contact him, she receives no response. Conrad and Michelle’s real-life relationship was bound to have some difficulties, so we decided to discover if they actually broke up before his death.

Did Michelle and Conrad Break Up Before His Suicide?

On July 13, 2014, Conrad Roy III was discovered in his truck, which was parked in a KMart parking lot in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The adolescent, who was eighteen at the time, died of carbon monoxide asphyxiation. His phone was in the car with him, and texts and call records with Michelle were later discovered on it.

Michelle was convicted of unintentional manslaughter and sentenced to 15 months in prison and five years of probation at a subsequent trial in 2017. Text messages and phone chats from the weeks leading up to the catastrophe became significant evidence throughout the trial. Thousands of texts were read aloud and presented as evidence, with a particular focus on those sent on Conrad’s dying day. The final day’s messages can be seen here.

Michelle and Conrad’s relationship, as depicted in the series, is likely to have had its share of squabbles. There is, however, no proof to back up the rumour that they split up. Indeed, based on their messages in the days leading up to his death, it appears that they were very much in love. Even while talking about suicide, they used phrases of endearment like “Love you” several times.

Conrad’s mother, Lynn Roy, testified in court during the trial that Michelle messaged her after her son died to tell her that she still loved him. An clip from a text discussion between Michelle and Conrad just before the latter’s death, in particular, reveals that the two were still very much in love in the final days.

“I would never leave you, and you’re the love of my life, my boyfriend,” Michelle says in the video. Before professing their love for one other, they say, “You’re my heart; I’d never leave you.”

Thus, based on the facts at hand, Michelle and Conrad did not break up and were almost probably together before to the latter’s death. It’s worth noting that their relationship developed primarily over text messages, phone calls, and emails, with the two only meeting in person a total of five times.

However, in the days preceding up to the catastrophe, they appeared to be together, and call records revealed that Michelle was chatting with Conrad just seconds before he died.
