The MLB trade deadline crazily got underway the day before, as too many deals have already gone short before today’s 6 p.m. ET deadline. But as we wait for the final move, we can look forward to tonight’s game, which will see Jacob deGrom return to the mound for the first time this season. Plus, there’s a couple of WNBA games you won’t want to miss, and the championship game of The Basketball Tournament is on the line with $1 million.
Here’s what I’m watching today.
A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sporting events are fluid and subject to change.
New York Mets at Washington Nationals
It’s a big day for both these clubs.
The Mets are expected to bring their franchise player back tonight at Jacob DeGrom for the first start of the season. It comes after nearly two injury-ridden seasons for a pitcher who, at his best, is arguably the most unattainable pitcher in baseball. He gives a Mets team that was already a World Series contender another blow toward a championship.
Meanwhile, the Nationals broke ties with their franchise player today. Juan Soto, whose name has been in business rumors for weeks, has been traded with Josh Bell to the Padres.

, Phoenix Mercury in the Connecticut Sun , The Suns have been playing arguably their best basketball of late season, but the winning streak was broken with an overtime loss to league-leading Sky. Last year’s regular-season champs found their progress at just the right time, and it’s bad news tonight for the Mercury team in a battle for position in a crowded playoff push. 7 p.m. ET, NBA TV, watch on fuboTV
, Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves , The Braves are trying to keep pace with the Mets at the top of the NL East and made a couple of trades yesterday to bolster their roster for the stretch run. The defending champions have been great lately and have kept the heat on at the Mets, but the Phillies also look like they’re turning a corner after five consecutive wins. , The Basketball Tournament: Americana for Autism vs. Blue Collar You , The winner of this game gets $1 million. The loser goes home without taking anything. It’s high drama at The Basketball Tournament tonight, and both teams full of high-level foreign professionals are playing for a good cause. Blue Collar You is a team of alumni from the University of Buffalo that honored victims of the mass shooting in Buffalo earlier this year, while Americana for Autism is raising funds for autism awareness. Las Vegas Aces at Washington Mystics
The Mystics secured a playoff berth over the weekend, a major achievement for the team coming down from the 2021 season. A key in the team’s resurgence has been the return to form of Elena delle Donne, who has scored in double digits in 11 straight games and once again as one of the league’s best players. Washington could make a statement tonight with a 22-8 win over the Aces, which is still right in the thick of things for the top spot in the league standings.
